Tenedos History

Bozcaada, a historical island whose origins date back to around 2000 B.C., was known as Leukophrys in ancient times and Tenedos in Greek mythology. Although the exact reason and timing behind its Turkish name remain uncertain, Piri Reis described the island in his work as having a tall, pointed gray hill (now known as Göztepe) from which the sea could be monitored up to 40 miles away. Similarly, ships approaching from the sea could spot this distinctive gray hill, leading Turkish sailors to refer to it as “Boz Ada” or “Bozcaada.”

Throughout its history, Bozcaada changed hands multiple times. During the Roman period, it served as an important port city. The island’s vineyards, wines, natural ecosystem, legendary sea, unique historical fabric, charming streets, and distinctive architecture continue to do justice to the sentiment expressed by Greek historian Heredotus: “God created Bozcaada so that people could live long lives.”
